![]() This fifth spoke, measurement tape, and pointed extension rotate around the fixed center point. There is a long pointed brass arm with a pin at the end extending from the diamond marking on this extra tape of measurements. These extra measurements add 30 minutes of arc precision to measurements. The "15" marking at either end and the marking are shared between both sets. There are two sets of markings on the tape. There is a slightly curved brass tape with additional markings fixed between the two points of the concave extension such that it sits just outside the circumference of the outer ring. It has a concave extension at the outer end. There is an additional fifth spoke that extends from the center ring to the outer ring. The four spokes line up with the 45, 135, 225, and 315 degree points. ![]() Every tenth degree (beginning with 10) is marked with the appropriate numeral. ![]() There are 360 degree increments engraved around the circumference of the outer ring. The spokes are fixed in right angles, marking off two perpendicular diameters and each quadrant of the circle. There are four, fixed brass spokes that extend from the central ring to the outside ring. Half of the center ring is filled in creating a half circle viewfinder to facilitate exact placement of the protractor. In the center of the ring there is a second, smaller brass ring. He was very interested in perpetual motion at the time and very convinced that he had found the secret but no-one would take him seriously." Celio was subsequently evicted from his workshop as the butcher's shop was demolished to make way for a block of units.Description The main body of the protractor is a brass ring. "I found him a charming and remarkable fellow. The kit disguised electrical contacts from which he was said to have illegally drawn power to light his premises and operate his machinery.įormer Museum Curator, Ian Debehahm, also remembered meeting Celio in his workshop/storeroom above the butcher's shop next to the Museum's Harwood Building in Mary Ann Street, Ultimo. He fabricated a kite which looked as if it was tangled in telegraph and power lines outside the buildings. Introducing the highly multifunctional Circle 360 Degree Full-round Protractor, which allows students to draw circles of any size and draw pie chart. ![]() Power to his Ultimo workshop was sourced via an interesting way. However, he did apparently make an arrangement with the Air League under whose auspices a gliding club was formed.Īs well as his helicopter and gliders Celio was working on drawings of perpetual motion machines while another project involved a folding sailing boat for which he made kit components of thin plywood gussets all rubber stamped with the individual kit part numbers. He came to Australia after World War II as a migrant and on arrival tried unsuccessfully to interest the Southern Cross Gliding club in his glider designs. Celio flew Hurricanes in the Western Desert during World War II and later Beaufighters against shipping in the Mediterranean Sea. He also lived and worked in Egypt, training pilots for the Egyptian Air Force on gliders and even piloted members of the Egyptian royal family in a conventional aircraft. Notes Hermes Celio was born in Greece but lived in France for most of his life where he was a glider champion. ![]()
